LONG TERM HOUSING

A Community of Support

Affordable housing is nothing without a caring environment. The YWCA provides both in 47 comfortable rooms. Many women in this program have called the YWCA home for many years.

Each woman has a private living space with full access to common kitchens for preparing and enjoying meals together and lounges for socializing and visiting with family. The supportive environment includes one-on-one case management services and help in accessing other community services.

Each year, the program provides long-term housing and support services to nearly 80 women.

The goal of the program is to provide women who may not have the chance to live on their own the opportunity to remain independent while having access to a support network of staff and fellow residents.

Program Details:

  • Case managers work with residents to maintain an independent and stable lifestyle

  • Participants develop an individualized service plan and participate in workshops such as life-skills trainings and job readiness programs

  • Recreational and social opportunities, such as craft classes and holiday celebrations, are also offered weekly

  • 47 single-room occupancy units are available on site for women over the age of 18 with shared kitchen, bathrooms, laundry facilities, and lounge

  • Experienced, trained staff help women overcome the effects of domestic violence and other trauma.

AFFORDABLE APARTMENTS

A Foundation for Economic Security

Quality, affordable housing is critical to a woman’s or family’s ability to achieve economic security and to children’s ability to succeed in school. Single mothers are at particular risk for housing insecurity. A recent report cited that a minimum-wage hourly employee would have to work 102 hours a week to be able to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent in Rochester.

The goal of YWCA Long Term Housing is to help women and families achieve self-sufficiency and maintain stable housing in the community, while providing a safe environment where their children can thrive. Supportive staff help residents access community services, prepare for and gain employment, and address barriers to independent living. Recreational and social activities build a sense of community and enrich residents’ lives.

  • Kathlyn Gardens on Portland Avenue provides 12 two- and three-bedroom units.

    • A large central courtyard provides room for children to ride bikes and play games in the summer months.

  • Vermont Manor, located on Culver Road, provides 16 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

    • A beautiful neighborhood with easy access to bus routes and shopping provides a sense of community.
Experienced, trained staff help women overcome the effects of domestic violence and other trauma.
